Breaking news: Vieira wins Asian Cup, then quits

Exiting Iraqi National team coach, Jorvan VieiraJorvan Vieira – the coach of the Iraqi National football team, who just won the Asian Cup – has quit. The absolute disorganization of Iraqi football was the reason behind not extending his 2 month contract.

Immediately after winning, Vieira announced his decision, and even tho’ pretty much everyone who had anything to do with Iraqi football begged him to stay, he has stood by his decision. Whilst stating he had no regrets about taking the job, he did say

“…I can’t fight against everybody. I’m looking for a club or a national team with good organization … here I’m doing everybody else’s job.”

He did work miracles with this team. When Vieira took them on, they were in disorder to the nth degree. Conditions were abysmal, Shiites Kurds and Sunis fought within the team and players weren’t available for trainings. But under Vieira, they grew as a unit, and pulled off what many would consider a miraculous victory on Sunday against the Saudis.

Retired South Korean Coach, Pim VerbeekThe South Korean coach, Pim Verbeek retired post the AFC Asian Cup, and Vieira confided that he had been contacted by the South Korean Football Association about coaching the national team, but maintains that as yet he has not made up his mind where he’ll go.

Verbeek leaves South Korea after having both coached the national team, and served as an assistant with both Guus Hiddink and Dick Advocaat.

Vieira is the man! He managed to lead the team to victory. I really hope the Malaysian will take him as a coach considering his experience in dealing with the craps with Iraqi officials… Malaysian situation could offer him more crap!
