Kicking Balls: AFL Round 22 Preview

31 08 2007

Kicking BallsWell finally we come to the end of the home & away season. Only 1 spot is up for grabs in the 8, but still plenty of shuffling for position to continue. Plus it will be nice to get back to actually playing footy rather than all the dramas going on off the pitch.

Collingwood vs Adelaide
If Adelaide win, they are in the 8. Lose, and they need results to go their way. Collingwood are playing to see if they can finish 5th or 6th, with the latter the most likely. For some reason I can see the Crows getting up in this one and making the rest of the battles to get in the 8 a non-event. Having said that, the Pies proved last week they aren’t done with yet and still think they can muster a september challenge. I’m tipping the Crows by 15 points.

Richmond vs St Kilda
It’s not inconceivable that, deflated from watching their season end the night before, the Saints may just get rolled and lift the Tiges off the bottom of the ladder. Somehow I see the Saints finishing off with a win though. The Tiges will struggle to contain the Saints forwards and on-ballers in what could be the last game for Robert Harvey and Fraser Gehrig, though rumours are circulating they’ll be talked into one more year. Saints by 20 points.

West Coast vs Essendon
Essendon are the Eagles #1 bogey team. Over 20 years the dons have an astonishing 65%+ winning ratio against West Coast, and seeing as this is the last game for Hird and Sheedy, will want to go out with a win. The Eagles need to win big to enusre they can hold second spot in the finals and a guaranteed 2 home finals, and should be too good in too many positions for the Bombers. Judd will miss this week, and it must be of huge concern going into the finals that Judd, Kerr, Hansen and Embley aren’t right. Eagles by 30 points.

Brisbane vs Geelong
Brisbane needs both Adelaide and St Kilda to get beaten and then to beat the minor premiers if they are to make the 8. It’s a big ask, but they’ll have a crack no matter what. Chris Scott will join the list of retirees and play his last game for the Lions, while Geelong will look to bounce back and get it’s team in order for their finals charge. Cats will be too good and win by 24 points.

Port Adelaide vs Fremantle
Freo have made the Powers job a little easier, suspending 6 players for the trip to Adelaide for grogging on and/or missing a recovery session. Port will know the equations necessary to earn 2nd spot and a home final, and it would seem the Dockers may be willing to help their cause. Port to win by 35 points, and Matthew Pavlich to overtake Brown to win the Coleman by 1 goal.

Sydney vs Hawthorn
It’s hard to know what will happen. Sydney have said that anyone carrying an injury won’t play, and the Hawks might be carrying some baggage from, ahem, ‘events’ from the past week. I think the Hawks should get up, but having said that, the Swans at home, if their full team plays, is a tough ask.. Again, my tip shall be conditional. Hawks by 20 points if Swans decide a couple of players need a rest. Swans by 10 points if they play their best available 22..

Western Bulldogs vs Kangaroos
The Roos will know if they can snatch 4th at some point during the game, but I don’t see that being an issue. The Dogs were woeful last week. Abysmal. Disgraceful. I don’t see Kangas will have ANY trouble ending their poor season and condemning them to bottom 4. Kangas by 40 points.

Melbourne vs Carlton
I refuse to tip this game. It is obvious that one of the teams is not taking it seriously in search of priority picks. It will be a mistake riddled farce, and it would not surprise me at all to see betting on the game suspended.. Ok, maybe not, but still, the incentives are there to lose the game. If you put a gun to my head and forced me to, I’d tip Melbourne by 30 points. Seriously though, it wouldn’t surprise me if the siren goes with a player 20m out directly in front, needing to kick a goal to win the game, and he kicks it out on the full..

Happy tipping boys and girls.. May the footy gods bless your teams.
