Brace yourself: Heavy hits to follow – Rugby World Cup 07

The Rugby World Cup…

As an Australian fan in Japan lots of emotions run rampant at the moment. Australia’s first game is in Lyon against Japan – it’s the one game the Japanese are absolutely dreading, and one that I’m looking forward to. Still… I head into viewing this RWC with a lil’ trepidation. As some of the commentary’s read here, the Wallabies aren’t quite as strong as we’ve been in years gone by. Then there’s just the pure, unaldulterated excitement at watching some damn good rugby on the new TV I purchased for this (well, truth be told – I needed a new TV. But the timing was purely for the RWC)… Not so long ago, I published an article titled Rugby World Cup – and ye gods am I excited – well, nothing’s changed.

So trepidation, joy, excitement – it’s going to be a good month.

Damn good advertisement for the Australian campaign in France…

I like Australia’s chances of going through pool play unbeaten. Japan & Canada will provide pretty much a training run for the Wallabies, and Wales are not the team they once were. They look damn ordinary at the moment. Unlike most punters, I think that the team that might finish second could be Fiji. I like the way the island nation plays – and if they can stay disciplined, they could well upset the Welsh & move out of this pool. They’re unpredictable, and a very physical unit.  The Wallabies are right where they want to be: over the last while, they’ve played some very good rugby – one of the only teams in the past few years to actually BEAT the All Blacks… and yet everyone’s playing them down as a unit that’s not as good as they should be.  Heaven help the opponent that doesn’t give them the respect this group deserves – only nation to have won twice.

Beyond? There are some powerful teams out there…
The might of South Africa simply cannot be discounted. I’ve watched a helluva lot of rugby over the past year, and the Springboks look like the team most likely to upset the All Black apple-cart. They have a powerful running game, and the strength of their forwards is a match with that of New Zealand.

An awe-inspiring Springbok advertisment (did you enjoy 300?)…

And that brings us to… the All Blacks.

Without a doubt at the moment one of the most dominant sports teams in any code, in any nation. This Rugby World Cup is theirs to win, and only a choking of monumental proportions will keep them from it.

The Might of the All Blacks… but will they prevail?

Exciting times ahead…

Totally not fair. Now I’m all amped to play, and I can’t do a damn thing about it.

I saw the Eagles play against Munster the Sunday before last: sad. We were trying to figure an over/under on the England match – I said 100. Can you forfeit a World Cup match?

I don’t think anyone ever has Brock.
And I must say: excellent name. You would have to be either a lock (I mean… ‘Brock-the-lock’!), or a star on ‘Days of Our Lives’.
Well done sir, well done. 😉
