No spears please! Rugby World Cup news

Los Pumas…

Funny how one game can change your perspective suddenly. With Argentina’s 33-3 point win over Georgia, all of a sudden the Argentineans don’t look so good. Los Pumas looked the goods against France, only to put in a sluggish effort in the first half against the Georgian unit – heading off the paddock at half time with a slim 6-3 lead. Argentina did play a much better second half, running out eventual victors 33-3, but only scoring 27 in the second half against Georgia, and being held try-less in the first half is anything but impressive.

Other Rugby World Cup news:
– US center Paul Emerick was suspended for a spear tackle – and was given 5 weeks. This basically ends his World Cup, unless he appeals & the appeal is upheld. Very unlikely – good to see the judiciary taking a hard stance on this sort of crap.
– English Captain Phil Vickery suspended for 2 games for intentional tripping. A little lucky. He could’ve gotten as many as 4 games – I think he got off lightly.
– Schalk Burger has been given 4 games for a dangerous tackle on Junior Polu in the game versus Samoa. This has pretty big consequences as that means the flanker won’t be available for the Quarter finals, coming back for the Semis if the Springboks make it that far… as is expected. Was a sloppy tackle, and Burger never looked like he was contesting the ball.

Three games today, with the USA taking on Tonga, Japan playing Fiji and Italy versus Romania. More news tomorrow…
