Kicking Balls: AFL Finals Week 3 – Do or Die

21 09 2007

Kicking BallsThis week, I’ll be doing the preview for Kicking Balls as iscdaws is currently trying to catch up on sleep after the birth of his daughter. Congratulations go out to John & his newly grown family…

This weekend, the Collingwood Magpies take on the Geelong Cats, and the Kangaroos take on the Port Adelaide Power.

Collingwood vs Geelong
The first game is on Friday night – Collingwood versus Geelong, at the MCG.
This should be an absolute ripper of a game… but nothing I’ve seen thus far indicates that the Magpies can match it with the Cats. Geelong’s been the class unit all year long – only losing 4 games for the year, and not once has been beaten by more than 20 points. In the second half of the season, they’ve lost once: to Port Adelaide by 5 points in round 21. Add to this, they have had a week’s rest.
Collingwood on the other hand could consider themselves damn lucky to still be in the finals. Only just falling into the 8 (in by 6 points – a game and a half), and winning the second round of the finals against West Coast in extra time.
The Pies have a pretty handy forward line, but the midfield, and overall speed of the Cats will ensure that Geelong win, and relatively well… despite the Pies wanting to do it for Nathan Buckley. Cats will claw their way home by 26.

Kangaroos vs Port Adelaide
The Kangaroos take on the might of Port Adelaide in AAMI Stadium in Adelaide. The Roos looked the goods last week against Hawthorn – easily beating a team that played above it’s weight all season… and will the week off be rest or rust for the Power?
I say ‘rest’. Port will return well-rested and the fact that the Kangaroos are going to be playing well behind enemy lines will be telling. The only thing going for the Roos here is that they are playing what’s a pretty young unit. The Roos do love to be playing as the underdogs, and have done so for all of the finals thus far. But the Port Adelaide forward line is simply going to be too much for the Kangaroos to cope with, regardless of whatever chip-on-the-shoulder they can muster. Port Adelaide to power home to the tune of 32.

Have to agree with the tips this week, big D – but seriously, Cats claw their way home? Port power home? Surely you can do better than that!
