Ireland done, dusted… wave bye-bye (Rugby World Cup updates)

Rugby World CupFrance 25 – Ireland 3 (September 21st)
Last night France handed out a pretty severe beating to Ireland, considering that the Irish would’ve still considered themselves a chance to head the table, despite extremely poor performances against both Namibia and Georgia. So given the table, it’s pretty much impossible for Ireland to head the table, or get second – even if they beat Argentina (a highly unlikely proposition)… due to not being capable of getting the bonus point against Georgia.
So this was a massive loss.
For France, they have one more game – against Georgia, and then it’s *probably* on to the Quarter-finals. As mentioned in an earlier article, it was do or die time in this game. France ‘did’, Ireland died.

Wales 72 – Japan 18 (September 20th – in Cardiff, Wales)
Even though it wasn’t the thrashing that Australia handed out to them, this defeat probably smarts all that much more for Japan – given their good performance against the Fijian unit. Simply put, the Welsh were just far too physically strong for Japan. And the Japanese runners were often left isolated, often inside their own 22. With this victory, Wales racked up their 300th international win… but if they play the ball like this against Fiji, there’s an altogether pretty good chance that the Islanders could pip them in this game. That would end the World Cup for the Welsh… as much as I’d like to see the Fijians do it, I think overall the Dragons will have too much.
For Japan? Now, they have Canada back in France… and that could be a ripper of a game between the two minnows of this pool. Looking forward to that one!

Italy 31 – Romania 5 (September 19th)
Although Italy won this rather handily, it pretty much underscored their dismissal. Scotland have looked the far stronger of the two thus far. Working on the extremely high probability that Scotland gets defeated by the All Blacks (Silvers?) this weekend, then the game between Italy & Scotland on September 29th becomes very, very important. I cannot see the Italians getting past the Scots on current form.

Great games coming up in the next week or so…
