Mottram pulls up short, but he’s ok…

16 08 2007

Nuh-uh, wrong Mottram blogfrica… wink wink…

Can Jamie run like this? ;)Anyway, Craig Mottram – Australian international athlete – will run as planned in the 5000 meters event in the World Athletic Championships that begins in Osaka in just over a week.

Mottram – whilst training for the event in London – stopped shy of finishing a training session, clutching his hamstring, then limped off the training track. Athletics Australia chief executive Danny Corcoran stated that Mottram was fine, and would compete as planned – “…just a scare.”

Mottram heads into this event as one of the favourites, having had only one loss at either 3000 or 5000 meters this season. His last race was a 2 mile event in London earlier this month – which he won.

City2Surf 07: field report

14 08 2007

a special report from our AFL correspondent, iscdaws…

I awoke yesterday morning, far too early to be considered reasonable for a Sunday, in preparation for my first City2Surf run. Having not competed for 5 years, not run a ‘fun run’ (why do they insist on naming them as such? What is fun about running 14km???) since 1993, and before 5 weeks ago I hadn’t run at all for 15 months, you can imagine I viewed the run before me with a little trepidation.

feet & heart poundin’…As we drove along closer to the city, I detected an eerie theme to the music on the radio “That was my mistake” was being blared at me by Split Enz, and a quick change of channel had Nathalie Imbruglia bellowing something about a “big mistake”. The omens were not good…

It was a lovely morning, sun shining, birds chirping, and people everywhere. It was a strange buzz. I am used to people glaring at each other before ‘races’, a general feeling that we were about to engage in mortal combat, yet here people were laughing, joking, singing and dancing. A sea of happy people. I wondered if they knew what they were getting themselves into. Read the rest of this entry »

Remember when: Rod Allen went ballistic…

3 07 2007

Whilst browsing through YouTube I found this gem. It’s obviously from quite a while ago, as the Yokohama team is wearing a ‘W’ on their caps – denoting that they are at that stage the ‘Yokohama Taiyo Whales’ (1978-1992). In 1993, they became the Yokohama Baystars… I’m pretty sure that this is from 1990 or ’91.

Rod Allen now…The team they’re playing is the Hiroshima Carp – and the guy chasing the pitcher is none other than Rod Allen (played with the Seattle Mariners, the Detroit Tigers & the Cleveland Indians), who now is the color commentator for FSN Detroit. Nice one Rod, always good to see ball-players with fire in their bellies.
